Standard C-1: Visionary Leadership

Indicators Addressed:

Visionary leadership Technology Coaches inspire and participate in the development and implementation of a shared vision for the comprehensive integration of technology to promote excellence and support transformational change throughout the instructional environment.
  1. Contribute to the development, communication, and implementation of a shared vision for the comprehensive use of technology to support a digital-age education for all students
  2. Contribute to the planning, development, communication, implementation, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans at the district and school levels
  3. Advocate for policies, procedures, programs, and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school and district technology plans and guidelines
  4. Implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and manage the change process in schools and classrooms
Being a visionary leader involves taking courageous ideas of change and show others how they can achieve them. For this standard I have included some examples of how I achieve this.

The first is a proposal I have submitted to ISTE called how to "Create A 21st Century Classroom on A Limited (or No) Budget". This presentation is to show teachers who get limited administrative support, how to begin the kinds of innovation that are at the core of the modern classroom. The approval is pending, but I believe it is a very important presentation.

The second piece of evidence I have included is a letter I wrote to the San Leandro USD Superintendant in regards to the district’s “Acceptable Use Agreement” (AUA), that the students are required to sign upon entering San Leandro Public Schools. The policy is not in line with modern standards of the 21st century classroom.

Among many problems with their policy is an absolute ban and blockage of “Social Networks”, which upon closer reading includes all sites where the students can contribute to the page. This is contrary to the basic ideals of collaborative education. They also state that any violation of the schools policy will result in being banned of limited from computer use at the school. My position is that computer use in the modern classroom should be no different that textbook or social interaction. You would not ban a student from having textbooks if they violated acceptable use of those materials. Why should computer use be singled out? The modern classroom requires computer access as much as, if not more, than textbooks. I mailed this letter to the stakeholders. I received a reply that the District’s policy is to be revised next year, and my points will be taken into consideration. If they change the policy, this could open up thousands of students to modern 21st century education. I will continue to push for updated standards to bring about authentic, blended learning to the schools .

Both of these action items are in progress, but clearly show I am working towards mastery in this standard.

These two pieces of evidence fulfill indicators a., b., c., and d .
